Do you think they worried all day all night about how they might present this bread and meat for Elijah so it would look appetising enough? Practicing holding it lightly with their claws so as not to puncture the crust and drop crumbs and serve some kind of mess of a dinner. Do you think? Through physical and conceptual disruptions and deconstruction, they highlight the restrictions, confusions, and ambiguities of experiencing life and place. These ambiguities are further investigated in the search for genuine worth and experience. By placing arbitrary value on trinkets and objects, they explore the true worth of these things and the myth of Truth in experience, place, and love. The idea of value and worth is pushed by playful accumulations. Building up a storage of ideas, games, words, things; to hoard a wealth of worthless things in order to dwell in a sea of ironic treasures. These treasures which are lost and found or thrown away and recovered, perhaps even destroyed and pieced back together again. Whose trash is whose treasure? What is this feeling of floating, of not being able to get our feet on the ground? The COVID-19 pandemic has further accelerated the shift from material- based communication to invisible virtual communication. To reground ourselves, we have engaged in a dialogue over 9 months through a range of artistic, discursive and technological methods that has sought to destabilise and question the dichotomy between the virtual and the real. This exhibition is the result of a collaboration between the Tokyo University of the Arts (TUA) and the Department of Printmaking at the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA), the University of Melbourne. The collaboration focuses on the productive space of translation and mistranslation in a shared production process over great distance, questioning the set up of globalised manufacturing. A process-oriented partnership between Geidai and VCA has evolved over the years and become a platform that enables cross-cultural discourse embedded in explorations of conceptual constructs. The exhibition will be presented at two sites in Tokyo and Melbourne as a presentation of the results of the project by nine students who conducted their collaborations online. It is a collaboration of reality, as Rosie imagines the objects in their original state and Shu re-imagines the objects based on written descriptions by Rosie. Each iteration of the object loses and gains information through translation and transcription. Each time, changing its mass, shape, purpose, and meaning. In both a figurative and physical sense describing both positive and negative things, the Hebrew word kavōd (כָּבוֹד) can refer to the heaviness of a weary body, as well as the weight of God’s glory. This artwork was made reflecting on this word by describing the overwhelming heaviness of Jesus’ suffering, the fatigue of his body and mind, the heavy hand of God in judgement, the darkened sky hanging over the cross, and the stone that seals his body in the tomb.
